What are allergies?

“Allergies” is a general term that refers to a reaction the body has to allergens. Allergens are substances that are generally not harmful to the body. However, if you have allergies, the immune system thinks allergens are dangerous and tries to fight them off like it would any other intruder, such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Having allergies, therefore, means the immune system is overactive. In other words, the immune system is doing something it is normally supposed to do but the reaction is exaggerated, unnecessary, and even harmful to the body. In medical terminology, this overreaction is called a hypersensitivity reaction type 1.

There are many different kinds of allergies that differ based on the part of the body affected and the severity of symptoms. In some cases, allergies may cause a small rash, itchy eyes or a runny nose. In other cases, allergies can be life-threatening. Types of allergies include, but are not limited to, allergic rhinitis (inflammation in the nose), contact dermatitis (an allergic reaction on the skin), allergic asthma (a specific type of asthma), allergic conjunctivitis (irritation of the eye lining) and anaphylaxis (a life-threatening condition that involves swelling of the airways).

What is allergic rhinitis?

Allergic rhinitis is sometimes called “hay fever” or “seasonal allergies,” although it can be caused by nonseasonal substances as well. Allergic rhinitis refers to inflammation in the nose (rhinitis) that occurs when you are exposed to a substance you are allergic to. The term “allergic rhinitis” does not refer to all kinds of allergies you may have. For example, food allergies and allergies to medications do not typically cause allergic rhinitis.

What is allergic conjunctivitis?

Allergic conjunctivitis is an eye inflammation caused by an allergic reaction to substances like pollen or mold spores. The inside of your eyelids and the covering of your eyeball have a membrane called the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is susceptible to irritation from allergens, especially during hay fever season.

What types of allergy treatments do you offer?

Currently we focus on allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis, and offer the following forms of prescription treatment:

  • An oral antihistamine used to treat allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis and dermatitis. It is taken by mouth. Effects generally begin within an hour and last for about a day.
  • A nasal spray used to relieve seasonal and year-round allergic and non-allergic nasal symptoms, such as stuffy/runny nose, itching, and sneezing. It can also help relieve allergy eye symptoms such as itchy, watery eyes. This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids. It works in your nose to block the effects of substances that cause allergies (such as pollen, pet dander, dust mites, mold) and to reduce swelling.
  • An eye drop that reduces the natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine can produce symptoms of itching or watery eyes. This antihistamine drop is used to treat itching, burning, redness, watering, and other eye symptoms caused by allergic conditions.
What about side effects?

These medications are generally well-tolerated by most people.  Some common side effects may include, but are not limited to:

Oral antihistamine tablet: drowsiness, headache, abdominal pain, nausea, dry mouth/nose/throat

Nasal spray: headache, dizziness, nosebleeds, nasal dryness/irritation, cough, nausea or vomiting, or an increase in eye pressure.

Eye drops: Headache, blurred vision, eye pain or swelling, nausea, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat.

The benefits and risks of these treatments must be discussed with a doctor, and if you are ever having any side effects, please discuss directly with them.

Can I get a refill of my existing allergy prescription?

Yes! But you will need to transfer your current prescription to Felix. Just choose the Transfer Now option to complete the steps to create a Felix account, complete your medical profile and give us all the information related to your current prescription. Our pharmacy will then contact your current pharmacy to complete the transfer.

How much does prescription allergies medication cost?

Allergy medication filled via Felix has a starting cost of $13.18 per bottle. The price does not include the pharmacy fill fee and it will vary based on the drug chosen, the province it is shipped to, and the refill schedule chosen.

Am I covered by my insurance?

Medications may be covered by provincial plans and some private plans. Make sure to upload your insurance card during your online visit so that the pharmacy can apply your coverage.
