Felix

What is Felix?

Felix is an end-to-end platform where you can get prescriptions for lifestyle medications through an online visit with a licensed Canadian doctor, and have your medication shipped to you on an automated refill schedule that works for you.

What are lifestyle meds?

Lifestyle meds loosely refer to medications that treat non-life-threatening and non-painful conditions such as baldness, wrinkles, erectile dysfunction, or acne. The primary function of lifestyle medications is to improve the user’s quality of life. Our mission is to give people easier access to these medications without compromising on healthcare standards.

How does it work?

It’s simple! You create a Felix account, complete your medical profile information, and answer a medical assessment specific to the type of prescription medication you are looking for. You will also have the chance to choose your refill schedule and shipping location during each visit. After you submit that information, a healthcare practitioner will review it and approve or deny your request based on your medical profile. If approved, we will send the prescription directly to our pharmacy partner and they will ship the medication to you, for free! You will then be charged and receive each refill, automatically, based on the schedule you chose, for the duration of your prescription.

Who can use Felix?

Anyone that is 18 years or older (16+ for birth control prescriptions) and has a shipping address in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Saskatchewan or Ontario. We cannot ship medication outside of these provinces at this time.

Why do you focus on generic pharmaceuticals over brand name?

Although Felix offers both brand name and generic version of all the medications, we are advocates of generic medication. Generic medications are more affordable and are more likely to be covered by your insurance plan. The generic medications we provide have the same active ingredients as their brand name counterparts, but with a smaller price tag. But the choice is always yours! If you want to read a bit more about the differences, go here.

What other medications will become available via Felix?

We are planning to offer prescriptions for a variety of other lifestyle conditions. If you want to know when they become available, sign up for our mailing list.

Is this safe?

Absolutely. All prescriptions obtained via Felix are provided by licensed Canadian healthcare practitioners—the same as you would get at a hospital, doctor’s office, or clinic. These doctors do not provide prescriptions unless they deem it medically safe and appropriate to write them based on your medical profile and assessment answers. Our assessments have been crafted by the specialists on our medical team. Finally, all medications delivered via Felix are authorized for sale by Health Canada and filled by a registered pharmacist—the exact same medications as you would get at any pharmacy.

Is this legal?

Yes! In Canada, only a licensed healthcare practitioner can write a prescription, and only a registered pharmacist can fill that prescription. We are supported by leaders in the Canadian pharmacology and specialized medical fields. Felix adheres strictly to all the regulations set forth by all applicable Colleges of Pharmacists and Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons in which we operate.

How it works

Do I need to have a prescription to use Felix?

No. In fact, the whole point is to get your prescription online, through Felix. However, if you do have an active prescription with another pharmacy but want to take advantage of automatic refills shipped to your door for free, you can transfer your prescription to Felix.

Please email our Customer Support team at hello@felixforyou.ca and they will be able to assist you with the transfer.

Can I just get the medication and skip the online visit?

No. A prescription written by a licensed healthcare practitioner is required for all medication currently provided through Felix’s service. If you already have the prescription, you can transfer it to Felix.

Please email our Customer Support team at hello@felixforyou.ca and they will be able to assist you with the transfer.

Do I need to complete my online visit at a scheduled time?

No. We use an asynchronous telemedicine model so you can complete your online visit in your own time and we save your progress so you can come back later to finish it.

How quickly will a healthcare practitioner review my online visit?

Your visit will be reviewed by a healthcare practitioner within 24 hours of submission. If you’ve been waiting longer than this, please email hello@felixforyou.ca and we’ll look into it.

How is my medication filled, shipped, and refilled?

Once your prescription is approved, our pharmacy partner network will be notified to begin the process of activating your prescription. You will receive an email from Felix asking if you would like to speak with the pharmacist, at which point the pharmacy will activate your profile. After that step is completed, they will charge and ship your medication. Refills will be automatically charged and shipped based on the refill schedule you chose during your online visit.

Can I pick up my medication from my own pharmacy?

Absolutely. If you would prefer to pick up your medication from a pharmacy of your choice instead of using free shipping through the Felix network, simply choose the “I prefer to pick up from my own pharmacy” option during the online visit and enter your pharmacy's contact information. Note: We cannot guarantee the prices of pharmacies outside our network.

How do I apply for multiple treatments?

Once you’ve created your Felix account and set up your medical profile, you can complete an online visit to any of the ailment categories you are eligible for using that same account.

I already have a prescription, can I transfer it to Felix?

Yes, you are able to transfer your existing prescription to Felix as long as you have at least one refill remaining for any of the medication categories offered via Felix.

Please contact our Customer Support team at hello@felixforyou.ca and they will be able to assist you.

If you no longer have refills remaining, you are able to submit a brand new visit by clicking here and our practitioners will be able to help you.

Do I need to complete the Medical Assessment if I am transferring my current prescription?

No! Since you have already been prescribed the medication by a doctor and are currently using it, all we need to do is change the pharmacy information. However, once your prescription runs out, you will then need to complete an Online Visit through Felix to renew the prescription with one of our doctors.

How do I renew my prescription?

After we ship your last refill, you will receive an email to complete a checkup visit. Follow the link in that email, answer a few questions and update your medical profile before submitting the request to your healthcare practitioner. Once your checkup is approved, your medication will continue to be shipped based on the schedule you choose.

How much does a checkup visit cost?

The cost of the checkup visit varies by category, but in many cases there is no charge, so long as you complete your checkup visit before your current prescription expires.

My prescription expired, can I still renew it?

You can only renew your prescription up to 30 days after the expiry date by completing a free checkup visit. Beyond this point, you will need to complete a new online assessment for a new prescription.

How do I change my medication after it has been prescribed?

Changing medication does legally require a new prescription as the healthcare practitioner will need to both cancel the existing prescription as well as review a health assessment of yours in the context of this different drug. Please feel free to submit a new assessment and our team will be happy to assist in getting a new prescription for the different medication.

Pricing and Payment

How much is the online visit?

Felix charges a fee for the online visit, but only if and when you are approved by the healthcare practitioner. In most cases the fee is $40 but varies by treatment category. The visit fee includes a prescription valid for up to a year(depending on the condition) and on-going support from the healthcare practitioner or pharmacist.

How much is the medication?

It will depend on the medication you choose. You will see the estimated cost of your medication, per refill, during the online visit which includes the pharmacy fill fee. That cost doesn’t include any potential deductions from your insurance/benefits coverage (if applicable).

When am I charged?

You will be charged for the online visit as soon as it is approved by the healthcare practitioner. From there, and after your prescription is activated by the pharmacy, you will be charged the medication cost for each shipment based on your chosen refill schedule. If you have insurance or benefits coverage, it will be applied according to your plan.

Why do I see a transaction on my credit card for my denied online visit?

When you submit an online visit, we pre-authorize your credit card for the amount of the visit. When your visit is denied, we will then release that pre-authorization, however, it can take up to 3 business days for your bank to update your statement to reflect that.

Why can’t I see medication prices on the website?

While it is illegal in Canada to display market pricing for prescription medication, you will be able to see the estimated cost of medication during the online visit. The price shown is an estimation and will vary if the healthcare practitioner prescribes you a different medication, or if you have insurance or benefits coverage. All estimated prices shown during the online visit include the pharmacy fill fee based on the refill schedule of your choice.

What is the pharmacy fill fee?

Every pharmacy charges a dispensing fee for filling prescriptions. Think of it as a service fee for knowledge and service provided by the pharmacist. If you get your medication through Felix, our pharmacy is still required to charge a fill fee and that fee is included in the price of medication that we display. A $12.00 fill fee is charged for each drug, every time you get a refill.

How do I change my credit card information?

Go to My Account and under Billing, you can update the credit card details on your Felix account.

Insurance and Benefits Coverage

Is the medication covered by my insurance or provincial health plans?

Medication coverage varies greatly between different plans, provinces, and has specific criteria that determine eligibility. We recommend that you upload your private and/or provincial benefit card during the online visit so that our pharmacy partner can apply any coverage you are eligible for before shipping your meds. For private insurance, we also recommend you check your plan manual to better understand how much coverage you have.

Is birth control covered by OHIP in Ontario?

As of April 1st, 2019, OHIP+ covers some birth control for all women in Ontario under 25 years old that do not have private insurance. Make sure to upload your OHIP card during your online visit so that the pharmacy can apply your coverage.

I didn’t have insurance when I first got my prescription, but now I have it. What do I do?

Go to My Account and under Billing, you can add or update the insurance information on your Felix account.

I uploaded my insurance information during my online visit but still see a cost for the medication in my profile.

The coverage you are eligible for will not be deducted until the pharmacy processes your refill, so the price you see in your profile is the estimated maximum medication cost before benefits. Once the pharmacy ships your meds, the actual cost will be displayed for the respective refill.

My insurance provider needs a physician to fill out a form before they will cover my medication costs. Can this be done through Felix?

Yes, but at the discretion of our medical team. Please email hello@felixforyou.ca to make a request and attach all applicable forms from your insurance provider. If the healthcare practitioner agrees to complete the form, a $25 fee per page will apply.

I forgot to upload my insurance information before my first fill was charged. What can I do now?

You will find the official receipt for your medication costs within your package from the pharmacy. This receipt can be used to submit a manual claim directly to your insurance/benefits provider. Future refills will be direct-billed directly to your insurance provider, once you have uploaded your insurance information from the Billing tab of your account.

Shipping

When is my medication shipped?

Status updates for your prescription will appear in the Upcoming tab. You’ll be able to see if your prescription is being processed by our pharmacists or if it’s en route for delivery.

Refill schedule (drug dependent)

  • Monthly: refill is processed approx. every 20 to 23 days
  • Every 2 months: refill is processed approx. every 50 to 53 days
  • Every 3 months: refill is processed approx. every 76 to 84 days
How much does it cost for shipping my medication?

We currently offer free shipping to patients that choose to have our pharmacy partner fill their medication.

What courier do you use for shipping?

Our pharmacy partner currently ships the medication via Canada Post.

Do I have to be home to receive my package?

A signature upon delivery may be required.

What happens if there isn’t anyone available for the delivery?

If there is no safe place to leave your package, or it requires signature but no one is available, your package will be available at the closest post office for pick up. Usually, packages are available for up to 5 days after the first attempted delivery. If you don’t pick up your package within the allotted time, it will be returned to the sender, which may cause a further delay in your delivery.

I received an email with a tracking number but it doesn't seem to be working!

The tracking number will be activated when the courier picks up the parcels, which happen on weekdays in the evenings. Check the tracking number later and you should then be able to see the status of your package.

Will I be able to receive my medication on time during the holidays?

If you want to get your medication on time for the holidays, we recommend you request an early refill in your My Account section as due to the increased volume at Canada Post during the holidays, delays are expected between Dec 15th to Jan 2nd.

How many days do I have to notify you of an undelivered or lost package, or damaged medication?

You have 14 days from the date your tracking link was sent to notify us of an undelivered or lost package, or damaged medication.

What do I do if my package was returned to Felix?

We’ll contact you via email if your package is returned to us! Your meds will be destroyed 1 month after your fill date should you fail to respond to Felix Customer Support or contact the partner pharmacy.

I am moving from one province to another, what should I do?

Please update your shipping address within your Felix account under the ‘Shipping’ tab as soon as possible. Changes must be made 48 hours prior to your next scheduled refill date. You will also then be required to reach out to our customer support team (via hello@felixforyou.ca or our live chat option on our homepage) to inform us of this change so that your prescription can be faxed from one pharmacy branch to another.

What does it mean if the drug I selected is on backorder?

When a drug is backordered, it means that the drug manufacturer does not have any of that drug in stock to provide the pharmacies with.

When will I receive my backordered drug?

We will have your medication filled and shipped to you as soon as the pharmacy is able to obtain more stock. Please note, if your medication is part of a larger acne package with us, the backordered medication will be shipped with the next refill of your package.

If one of the drugs in the package I selected is on backorder, will the rest of my package still be shipped to me?

Yes, if you selected a package we will still ship all other drugs you were prescribed as scheduled. If you didn't select a package, we will have your medication filled and shipped to you as soon as the pharmacy is able to obtain more stock.

Do I still have to pay if the drug I selected is on backorder?

You will only pay for the drug when it becomes available again and is included in your shipment.

I don’t want to wait to receive the backordered drug I selected, what should I do?

If your visit is still pending, we recommend you reach out to the prescribing healthcare practitioner directly as they can recommend a similar drug that isn’t backordered. If you have already been approved for a prescription for a backordered drug, a new prescription would be required to change medication. Please reach out to our support team via email at hello@felixforyou.ca or using our live chat feature.

How and when can I update my shipping address?

You can update your shipping address at any time from within your Felix account under the “Shipping” tab. Changes must be made 48 hours prior to your next scheduled refill date. Any last minute change should be communicated to our customer support team (hello@felixforyou.ca) so that we can attempt to update this prior to your refill being shipped.

My Felix Account

How long does a prescription last?

Prescriptions written by Felix healthcare practitioners will last for 12 months from the date of issue. Generally, your Felix prescription will contain refills for a one year supply of the prescribed medication. However, the amount of medication and the number of refills prescribed will ultimately be decided by the practitioner who reviews your online visit.

What do I do if I don’t want to receive my next medication refill?

You can pause your refill delivery at any time by going to your Prescriptions in your Felix Account. No new medication refills will be processed while your account is set as paused. Please note that any refill that has already been charged and processed by the pharmacy team prior to the account being paused cannot be cancelled.

How can I update my government ID?

Go to My Account and under your profile, you can upload a new file with your new ID. You must always have the most up to date ID on file.

How do I fully cancel my Felix prescription?

You can cancel your prescription at any time by reaching out to our customer support team via email at hello@felixforyou.ca or using our live chat feature! Please note that prescription refills are non-refundable and non-returnable once they have been processed and charged by our pharmacy. Due to this, we do require cancellation requests to be submitted at least 24 hours before your next scheduled refill date to avoid the processing of unwanted refills.

Telemedicine

What does your medical team do?

Our medical team and board members help oversee each of our health categories to ensure our medical assessments are thorough, safe, personalized, and on-par with the best that in-person care can offer. Our pharmacists work with us to provide best-in-class service and support.

Who are the practitioners that will be reviewing my online visit?

They are all licensed, real Canadian healthcare practitioners! All online visits submitted via Felix are reviewed by them and they must be licensed in your province to prescribe you the medication. It is these healthcare practitioners, and not Felix, who determine whether or not to write you a prescription, as well as the appropriate dosage (where applicable).

Does Felix replace my doctor?

No. Felix provides a faster, hassle-free way for you to get a prescription to certain medications but our service does not replace your doctor or nurse practitioner. For matters that extend beyond obtaining a prescription lifestyle medication safely and easily, we encourage you to consult your primary health practitioner in person — whether for checkups, personal health concerns, or to inform them about the medications you are currently using.

Do I need to talk to a healthcare practitioner?

One of the many benefits of our service is that you don’t always have to, per se, talk to the healthcare practitioner. We use a model where all the relevant information needed by them is asked during the online visit, through a medical assessment questionnaire, so you don’t have to connect with them in person. But, if the practitioner has additional questions after you submit your online visit, they will connect with you via our secure messaging portal, which means you can answer their questions at your own pace, and ask some of your own.

However, if you prefer to speak to a doctor in person about your needs, we encourage you to book an appointment with your primary care practitioner or a specialist as Felix might not be the right fit for you.

I’ve been using the prescribed medication but have some questions regarding side effects. What should I do?

For any medical-related questions, we strongly recommend that you speak to the prescribing healthcare practitioner directly as they know what’s best for your health. You can do so by going to your Felix account and messaging the practitioner for that specific prescription.

It's an emergency. What do I do?

Call 911 or proceed to your nearest emergency room immediately. Felix is not intended for medical emergencies.

Privacy

Is my information private and secure?

Yes, your security is paramount to Felix’s mission. Personal health information provided during your medical assessment is strictly and legally confidential between you and the Felix healthcare practitioner.

Beyond that, all your account information (including the medical assessment, credit card, and shipping information, etc.) is also stored safely and securely. Felix is compliant with The Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) of Ontario. It is our duty to protect your data with comprehensive security infrastructure and stringent data policies to ensure it stays private and secure.

Read more on our Privacy Policy.

Is your packaging discreet?

Absolutely. All Felix shipments arrive in a nondescript blister package so you can have your medication shipped wherever makes sense for you as long as there is someone there to sign for it.

Can I have my medical records with Felix shared with my primary care provider?

Yes! We can fax the record of your online visit with Felix directly to your family doctor. Please send a request message to your prescribing doctor via your My Account section.

Allergies

What are allergies?

“Allergies” is a general term that refers to a reaction the body has to allergens. Allergens are substances that are generally not harmful to the body. However, if you have allergies, the immune system thinks allergens are dangerous and tries to fight them off like it would any other intruder, such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Having allergies, therefore, means the immune system is overactive. In other words, the immune system is doing something it is normally supposed to do but the reaction is exaggerated, unnecessary, and even harmful to the body. In medical terminology, this overreaction is called a hypersensitivity reaction type 1.

There are many different kinds of allergies that differ based on the part of the body affected and the severity of symptoms. In some cases, allergies may cause a small rash, itchy eyes or a runny nose. In other cases, allergies can be life-threatening. Types of allergies include, but are not limited to, allergic rhinitis (inflammation in the nose), contact dermatitis (an allergic reaction on the skin), allergic asthma (a specific type of asthma), allergic conjunctivitis (irritation of the eye lining) and anaphylaxis (a life-threatening condition that involves swelling of the airways).

What is allergic rhinitis?

Allergic rhinitis is sometimes called “hay fever” or “seasonal allergies,” although it can be caused by nonseasonal substances as well. Allergic rhinitis refers to inflammation in the nose (rhinitis) that occurs when you are exposed to a substance you are allergic to. The term “allergic rhinitis” does not refer to all kinds of allergies you may have. For example, food allergies and allergies to medications do not typically cause allergic rhinitis.

What is allergic conjunctivitis?

Allergic conjunctivitis is an eye inflammation caused by an allergic reaction to substances like pollen or mold spores. The inside of your eyelids and the covering of your eyeball have a membrane called the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is susceptible to irritation from allergens, especially during hay fever season.

What types of allergy treatments do you offer?

Currently we focus on allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis, and offer the following forms of prescription treatment:

  • An oral antihistamine used to treat allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis and dermatitis. It is taken by mouth. Effects generally begin within an hour and last for about a day.
  • A nasal spray used to relieve seasonal and year-round allergic and non-allergic nasal symptoms, such as stuffy/runny nose, itching, and sneezing. It can also help relieve allergy eye symptoms such as itchy, watery eyes. This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids. It works in your nose to block the effects of substances that cause allergies (such as pollen, pet dander, dust mites, mold) and to reduce swelling.
  • An eye drop that reduces the natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine can produce symptoms of itching or watery eyes. This antihistamine drop is used to treat itching, burning, redness, watering, and other eye symptoms caused by allergic conditions.
What about side effects?

These medications are generally well-tolerated by most people.  Some common side effects may include, but are not limited to:

Oral antihistamine tablet: drowsiness, headache, abdominal pain, nausea, dry mouth/nose/throat

Nasal spray: headache, dizziness, nosebleeds, nasal dryness/irritation, cough, nausea or vomiting, or an increase in eye pressure.

Eye drops: Headache, blurred vision, eye pain or swelling, nausea, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat.

The benefits and risks of these treatments must be discussed with a doctor, and if you are ever having any side effects, please discuss directly with them.

Can I get a refill of my existing allergy prescription?

Yes! But you will need to transfer your current prescription to Felix. Just choose the Transfer Now option to complete the steps to create a Felix account, complete your medical profile and give us all the information related to your current prescription. Our pharmacy will then contact your current pharmacy to complete the transfer.

How much does prescription allergies medication cost?

Allergy medication filled via Felix has a starting cost of $13.18 per bottle. The price does not include the pharmacy fill fee and it will vary based on the drug chosen, the province it is shipped to, and the refill schedule chosen.

Am I covered by my insurance?

Medications may be covered by provincial plans and some private plans. Make sure to upload your insurance card during your online visit so that the pharmacy can apply your coverage.

Cold Sores

How effective is cold sore medication?

Treating a cold sore in its earliest stage can result in a smaller sore that heals quickly. Ideally, the cold sore may be stopped in its tracks, so it never appears at all. People who frequently get cold sores may want to have the appropriate medications on hand so that they can begin using them at the earliest possible stage.

What types of cold sore treatment do you offer?

The medicines that have been proven to work on cold sores are called antivirals, and they work to stop a virus from replicating. This, in turn, can stop the cold sore from developing or may reduce its size and healing time. Antiviral medications are only available with a prescription. Cold sore antivirals come in two different forms:

  • topical medication (cream) that is applied directly to the area
  • oral medications (pills) that are taken by mouth
What about side effects?

Antivirals are well-tolerated by most people. However, not everyone can or should take antivirals. The benefits and risks must be discussed with a doctor.

Topical treatments can have some side effects including dry lips, dryness of skin, cracked lips, burning skin, shedding skin, itching, flakiness, and stinging on the skin.

The more common side effects of oral antiviral treatment include:

  • headache
  • dizziness
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • stomach discomfort

If you experience side effects, we always suggest you discuss them with a doctor or pharmacist. Oral medications may not be the best choice for certain people. People with kidney damage or kidney failure may need a lower dosage. Be sure to tell your doctor if you have kidney problems before you start taking the drug.

Can I get a refill of my existing cold sore prescription?

Genital Herpes

How effective is genital herpes treatment?

When taken at the start of a genital herpes outbreak, the treatment prescribed by your healthcare provider may decrease the intensity of symptoms, decrease the duration of the outbreak, and reduce the risk of spreading genital herpes. When treated daily, genital herpes treatment can help suppress outbreaks for those who experience them frequently.

What types of genital herpes treatment do you offer?

We prescribe an antiviral medication, which is the most effective option for treating or preventing genital herpes outbreaks. Antivirals are only available with a prescription. Genital herpes antivirals come in two different forms:

  • topical cream that is applied directly to the affected area
  • pills that are taken by mouth
What about side effects?

Genital herpes treatments are well-tolerated by most people. Oral treatment is quite safe and generally has few side effects, but possible side effects include headaches, dizziness, depression, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, stomach pain, and joint pain. The benefits and risks must be discussed with a doctor.

Topical treatments can have some side effects including dry lips, dryness of skin, cracked lips, burning skin, shedding skin, itching, flakiness, and stinging on the skin.

Oral treatments may not be the best choice for certain people. People with kidney damage or kidney failure may need a lower dosage. Be sure to tell your doctor if you have kidney problems before you start taking the drug.

Birth Control

How effective are birth control pills?

If used exactly as instructed, birth control pills are approximately 99.7% effective. However, due to timing errors, forgotten pills, result in birth control pills being closer to 91% effective. Needless to say, the better you are at taking your birth control prescription medication as prescribed, the more likely it to be more effective.

Can I get a refill of my existing birth control prescription?

Yes! But you will need to transfer your current birth control prescription to Felix. Just choose the Transfer Now option to complete the steps to create a Felix account, complete your medical profile and give us all the information related to your current birth control prescription. Do you offer alternative forms of birth control?

Currently, Felix offers pills, patches, and rings as birth control options.

Which birth control option is right for me?

During the online visit, you will be able to say that you are not sure and the doctor will prescribe according to your medical profile and assessment. You can also send the doctor a question as to what birth control option may work best for you.

How much does the prescription birth control cost?

Birth control medication filled via Felix has a starting cost of $8.74 per package. The price does not include the pharmacy fill fee and it will vary based on the drug chosen, the province it is shipped to, and the refill schedule chosen.

Am I covered by my insurance?

Treatments are generally covered by provincial plans and by some private plans. As of April 1st, 2019, OHIP+ covers birth control for all women in Ontario, under 25 years old and that do not have private insurance. Make sure to upload your OHIP card during your online visit so that the pharmacy can apply your coverage.

Can I get birth control online?

Yes, with Felix you can get birth control online. Complete a short online assessment and select from the treatment options available. If approved by a doctor, your medication will ship to your door.

How do birth control pills work?

Birth control pills work by preventing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to stop sperm from penetrating the uterus, and changing the thickness of the lining of the uterus so that a fertilized egg cannot implant. Talk to your healthcare practitioner to find out more about the differences between each type of birth control pill and to find the best birth control for you.

How do I take birth control pills?

It's always best to follow your healthcare practitioner's advice on how to take birth control pills. It's important to take your birth control pill at the same time every day, but don't panic if you miss a pill. The schedule for different types of birth control pills can vary (some come in 21, 24, or 28-day packs), so talk to your healthcare practitioner if you have specific questions.

How to get birth control online

You can get birth control online by ordering through an online healthcare service like Felix. Rather than having to go to the doctor to renew your prescription, then to the pharmacy to get your prescription filled every few months, you can skip all those visits and get your prescription and medication right through Felix. Since birth control is one of those things that you don’t want to accidentally miss doses of, it’s particularly helpful to have a regular supply delivered right to your door without  having to think about it. You do need to have a prescription, which requires speaking to a licensed healthcare practitioner who can take your medical history and other factors into account, but now that can be done securely and comfortably without having to leave your home. There’s nothing more annoying than realizing you’re down to your last birth control pill and you need to run out for an emergency refill, where the pharmacy may charge an emergency refill fee on top of the usual cost of the medication. By ordering online, you can avoid ever having those situations again.

How to get birth control

You can get birth control by talking to a licensed healthcare practitioner and getting a prescription that is suitable for your lifestyle. The most common kinds of prescription-only birth control are oral contraceptives, more commonly known as the pill. However, other prescription-only types of birth control exist, such as the birth control patch and the vaginal ring. To get any of these prescription-only forms of birth control you’ll need to meet with a doctor who will ask about your medical history and any other medications you may be taking before writing you a prescription. Then, you can get your prescription filled at any pharmacy. An even easier way to get prescription birth control is to use an online healthcare provider like Felix. With Felix, you can set up an online visit, get your prescription, and order your birth control all from one site. This way, you can save the trips to the doctor and the pharmacy, and you never have to worry about running out. If you’re looking for non-prescription types of birth control, such as condoms and spermicide, you can find these at any drug store and many other retailers over-the-counter with no prescription required.

How to get a birth control prescription

You can get a birth control prescription through a licensed Canadian healthcare practitioner. If you have a family doctor, they will be able to prescribe you birth control. A walk-in clinic can also provide birth control prescriptions. You may be asked when your last Pap smear was, and if you’re overdue for one the doctors may only give you a prescription for a few months, encouraging you to get your regular Pap smear and then come back for a longer prescription. The easiest way to get a birth control prescription is through an online healthcare provider like Felix. Your prescription will still be written by a licensed healthcare professional, as is legally required in Canada, but you don’t have to visit them in person to get it. Instead, you can set up an online consultation, provide the necessary information about your medical history and anything else that may be relevant, and get your prescription without having to leave your home. You can then order your birth control directly to your doorstep through Felix, so you can skip the pharmacy trip, too. With recurring deliveries, you don’t have to worry about realizing you’re at the end of your pack of pills without a refill ready to go.

How to get birth control pills without a doctor

You can get birth control pills without visiting a doctor by using an online healthcare service like Felix. Your quick online visit with Felix will still be reviewed by a healthcare practitioner, who will then prescribe oral contraceptives if appropriate for you, but you don’t have to go to a doctor’s office at any point in the process. In Canada, only licensed healthcare practitioners can write prescriptions, and these have to be filled by registered pharmacists. Felix takes care of all of this without you having to go to a doctor’s office or pharmacy.  Instead, once your prescription has been written, you can order your contraceptive pills from Felix and have them delivered to your home without any hassle of going to a pharmacy to get your prescription filled. Plus, you can have them delivered to you regularly, so you’ll never find yourself rushing to the pharmacy because you realized you’re all out of birth control pills. Even if you don’t have a family doctor, you can quickly and easily get your birth control prescription and have your first order of birth control pills on its way to you in no time.

How to get birth control in Canada

To get birth control in Canada, you have to get a prescription from a licensed healthcare practitioner. Of course, there are also non-prescription forms of birth control that you can buy over the counter at drug stores and other retailers. However, if you want to take oral contraceptives, these need to be prescribed by a doctor. Once you have your prescription, you can get it filled at any pharmacy. Typically, you may be able to buy up to three months at a time. Once you’re out, you return to the pharmacy to get a refill. If there are no more refills left on your prescription, you’ve got to get a new one from a doctor. The easier way to do this is to use an online healthcare service like Felix. You can get your prescription online and order your birth control to be shipped right to your home regularly. This saves you having to think about when it’s time to refill your prescription, and you’ll never find yourself all out of pills and rushing out to get more. You can also skip the doctor’s visit to renew your prescription since this can all be done easily online.

Erectile Dysfunction

Can I get brand name ED medication?

Absolutely. You will have the opportunity to select your preferred prescription ED medication while completing your online visit, including both brand name and generic options. As a policy, Felix advocates generic medications as more affordable and more likely to be covered by your insurance plan.

Are prescription ED medications effective?

Oral ED medication is generally considered extremely effective and studies show it works for the majority of men, but not all. All medications prescribed by Felix healthcare practitioners are authorized for sale by Health Canada and dispensed by an accredited Canadian pharmacy.

Are there other treatments available?

Other treatment options for ED include lifestyle improvements (e.g., exercise, diet, quitting smoking, limiting alcohol use), surgery, penile vacuum pumps, and other ED medications. Every treatment comes with risks and benefits that you should fully understand before moving forward with it.

Why do I need to know my blood pressure to get an ED prescription?

Blood pressure is an important factor in determining whether it is safe for you to use prescription ED medication. To complete your online visit, it is essential that you are accurate and honest about your blood pressure and that it was taken within the last 6 months. When used improperly, these medications can cause serious harm or even death. If you haven’t had your blood pressure taken within the last 6 months, you can get a free blood pressure range at most retail pharmacies or at a clinic.

How much does ED medication cost?

ED medication filled via Felix has a starting cost of $10.62 per pill. The price does not include the pharmacy fill fee and it will vary based on the drug chosen, the province it is shipped to, and the refill schedule chosen.

Am I covered by my insurance?

Medication coverage varies greatly between different plans, provinces and has specific criteria that determine eligibility. We recommend that you upload your private and/or provincial benefit card during the online visit so that our pharmacy partner can apply any coverage you are eligible for before shipping your meds.

What causes erectile dysfunction?

ED has several causes, both physical and psychological, and lifestyle factors can also be at the root of ED. It's best to talk to your healthcare practitioner. They may perform several tests to get to the bottom of what's causing your ED.

How to get an ED prescription

To get an ED prescription you’ll need to talk to a healthcare practitioner who can assess your situation and write a prescription. In Canada, only licensed healthcare practitioners can write prescriptions. Your primary care doctor can do this, or you can use an online health service like Felix and get your prescription online, without having to visit the doctor’s office. The most common symptoms of ED are difficulty getting an erection and difficulty maintaining a firm enough erection for long enough to have a satisfying sexual experience. Once you have your prescription, you can go to a pharmacy to get it filled. If you’re using an online healthcare provider like Felix, you can skip the pharmacy and order your medications online. They’ll be delivered to your home discreetly and on a schedule that works for you, so you’ll never be without them when you need them most.

How to get ED medications

You can get prescription ED medications at a pharmacy or through an online healthcare provider such as Felix. They are safe, effective, and widely used drugs, but like all prescription medications, it’s important to have your situation reviewed by a doctor first to make sure it’s safe for you to take them. If you come across over-the-counter products making claims about being similar to prescription medication, it’s not advisable to buy those, because these drugs are regulated and the over-the-counter products may not be safe, let alone effective. If you want to avoid the doctor and pharmacy wait times, the best way to get ED medications is through an online platform like Felix. After a quick online visit, if approved you’ll get your prescription and be able to order your medication online for delivery to your doorstep. Plus, you don’t have to worry about running out when you need those ED pills most. Felix can deliver them at an interval of your choosing, so you’ll always have some on hand. If you have an existing prescription, you can get that transferred over to Felix so that you can start ordering your medications online.

Are ED pills covered by insurance?

ED pills are not covered by insurance in Canada. While many people suffer from erectile dysfunction, ED drugs are considered lifestyle drugs for non-life-threatening conditions under Canada’s health insurance coverage. However, one way to save on the price of these drugs is to opt for the generic version instead of the brand name. The generic versions are chemically identical, so you can expect the same results even if you choose the generic version. If you purchase erectile dysfunction medications through Felix, you will see the estimated price for each refill when you go through your online visit. Then, you can determine if the price works for your budget. In the case of erectile dysfunction, there can also be common lifestyle factors that contribute to the condition. These can include an unbalanced diet, insufficient sleep and exercise, smoking, and alcohol consumption. If any of these contribute to your ED symptoms, you may find that you need the pills less frequently if the lifestyle conditions improve.

Acne

What about side effects?

Topical prescription acne treatment is a generally safe and effective medication. However, some users experience side effects.

The most common side effect is a warm, stinging sensation on the skin directly after the medication is applied. This is often accompanied by dry and itchy skin, redness, mild peeling/scaling, and sun sensitivity.

This treatment can also potentially make your acne get worse before it gets better. In most cases, this side effect is temporary and goes away after two to four weeks of use.

Many of these minor side effects resolve on their own, while others are easily fixed by using a moisturizer or other skin care products to counter the dryness. Consult our safety information sheet to learn more.

Can I be accurately assessed remotely?

Absolutely. The acne assessment you will complete via Felix requires you to upload photos of your skin for the doctor or nurse practitioner to review. These photos, along with the other medical information you provide, will usually be sufficient for the doctor or nurse practitioner to determine whether or not you are eligible for a prescription as well as craft an appropriate treatment plan. Though unlikely, the doctor or nurse practitioner may follow up with some questions via secure chat (we’ll ping you via email if there are any messages in your inbox).

How much does the prescription skin cream cost?

Skin medication filled via Felix has a starting cost of $6.52 per tube. The price does not include the pharmacy fill fee and it will vary based on the drug chosen, the province it is shipped to, and the refill schedule chosen.

Am I covered by my insurance?

Medication coverage varies greatly between different plans, provinces and has specific criteria that determine eligibility. For those in Ontario that are under 25 years old, OHIP+ will cover the cost of certain acne medications. Make sure to upload your OHIP card during your online visit so that the pharmacy can apply your coverage.

Can I get acne treatment online

Yes, with Felix you can get treatment for acne online. Complete a short online assessment and select from the treatment options available. If approved, your medication will ship to your door.

Hair loss

How does hair loss treatment work?

One of the treatments we offer is an orally administered pill that functions by preventing the conversion of testosterone into a follicle-shrinking androgen called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Hair loss treatments can work to preserve hair and may even regrow hair.

Are prescription hair loss medications effective?

The treatments we offer are generally recognized as the most effective therapy for treating thinning hair — otherwise known as male pattern baldness. Increased hair on the scalp can be seen within three months of starting treatment and longer-term studies have demonstrated increased hair on the scalp at 24 and 48 months with continued use. In one study, this drug was effective at stopping hair loss in 83% of men compared to 28% for the placebo group. Effectiveness only persists as long as the drug is taken. It typically works better to prevent further hair loss than to regrow lost hair.

What about side effects?

As with any prescription medication, side effects may occur. For the vast majority of patients, this prescription treatment works without causing side effects. However, some men may experience a reaction. Read our important safety information to learn more about possible side effects. If you experience any side effects, talk to your healthcare practitioner.

Can I be accurately assessed remotely?

When you complete an online visit for a hair loss treatment,  we will ask all the relevant questions the healthcare practitioner needs to understand your alopecia and make the best decision. Also, if the healthcare practitioner needs further information, they will follow up via our secure provider/patient chat.

How much does hair loss medication cost?

Hair loss medication filled via Felix has a starting cost of $41.23 per 30 pills.

Can I get hair loss treatment online?

Yes, with Felix you can get treatment for certain types of hair loss online. Complete a short online assessment and review options. Once approved by the licensed healthcare practitioner, your medication will ship to your door.

How to treat hair loss?

To treat hair loss you can use several different topical and oral treatments, either alone or together. The best course of treatment for you will depend on the diagnosis of your hair loss condition. While androgenic alopecia, also known as male-pattern baldness, is one of the most common types of hair loss, there can be other underlying issues contributing to hair loss. A licensed Canadian healthcare practitioner can conduct some tests to determine if there is an underlying health issue that needs to be addressed. If not, then the most common treatments for male pattern baldness are minoxidil, also known as Rogaine, and prescription oral medications. There are also medical interventions, like hair follicle transplants and laser therapy, that can be effective. Your healthcare practitioner can go over the different options with you, comparing things like price and other factors that may influence your decision. However, the good news is that there are a variety of treatment options available for hair loss. Many people have success with the most common treatments.

Why is there no cure for hair loss?

There is no cure for hair loss because the mechanisms by which the best treatments for thinning hair work aren’t entirely understood. Hair loss is part of a complex interconnected system in the body, and we understand that hormones play a major role, especially the hormone DHT. It’s not as simple as tweaking a person’s hormones to achieve a full head of hair. Two of the best treatments for hair loss, minoxidil and oral medication, were both accidental innovations in the field of hair loss treatment. While discovering the cure for hair loss would be exciting news for billions of people, for now, we have to work with the available treatments, which can still be very effective at keeping hair loss at bay. However, with both, the results only last as long as the treatment is being used.

Where do you go for hair loss?

The best place to go for hair loss is, firstly, a licensed healthcare practitioner. That’s because they will be able to determine if you are experiencing androgenic alopecia, also known as male-pattern baldness, or if you might have an underlying health condition that is contributing to hair loss and that needs to be addressed first. When you first go in, they may ask about your diet and lifestyle, hair styling routine, stress levels, and other factors that may impact your hair. They will also ask about your family history, including whether hair loss was experienced by your parents and grandparents. A blood test is also typically used to determine if some underlying medical disorders or diseases need to be treated. The healthcare practitioner may pull out a few strands of hair to determine what stage of hair loss you’re at, and they may even conduct scalp biopsies to reveal if there is an infection that is contributing to the hair loss. These assessments will determine the best course of action, and if they find that you have male pattern baldness, they can also prescribe a widely used and effective treatment.

What doctor can I see for hair loss?

The provider to see for hair loss is, firstly, a family doctor or nurse practitioner. A primary care provider will be able to diagnose most hair loss conditions and can carry out initial assessments, after which they may refer you to a dermatologist who can offer a range of treatments. Alternatively, if other treatments aren’t needed but you’re dealing with male-pattern baldness, they can prescribe or recommend appropriate treatments. You can also have an online visit through a platform like Felix, where you’ll go through an assessment that will be reviewed by a licensed Canadian healthcare practitioner before they prescribe you a treatment. Since understanding your underlying health conditions is important before a licensed healthcare practitioner can prescribe a treatment for hair loss, you’ll also have to get a blood test done in advance of getting a prescription. Once you have your prescription through Felix, it’s good for up to a year, and you can have your hair loss treatment mailed to your home at an interval that works for you. If you already have a prescription for finasteride, you can transfer this over to Felix and skip the trips to the pharmacy to refill your prescription.

Migraines

What are the symptoms of a migraine?

In addition to a pulsating headache (normally on one side of the head), other migraine symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, and/or sensitivity to light and sound.

How long do migraines last?

It varies a lot, but migraines tend to last between a few hours to as long as a couple of days.

Is migraine medication effective?

Various forms of migraine medication have shown to be effective in trials when tested against a placebo.

Can I get a refill of my existing migraine prescription?

Yes! But you will need to transfer your current prescription to Felix. Just choose the Transfer Now option to complete the steps to create a Felix account, complete your medical profile and give us all the information related to your current prescription. Our pharmacy will then contact your current pharmacy to complete the transfer.

Am I covered by my insurance?

Medications are generally covered by provincial plans and by some private plans. Make sure to upload your insurance card during your online visit so that the pharmacy can apply your coverage.

Mental Health

What is mental illness?

Mental illness is an umbrella term for a variety of different mental health conditions such as major depressive disorder, general anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, eating disorders, and many others. Mental illnesses can cause you stress and have a negative effect on your ability to function on an everyday basis and interact with others.

How can I treat my mental health condition?

Most mental health conditions can be managed by specific treatments prescribed by healthcare practitioners and by attending psychotherapy or counselling sessions with licensed mental health professionals. Other things such as getting the right amount of sleep, exercise and eating well, can contribute to mental health treatment.

What types of treatment do you offer?

Felix offers treatment for mental health conditions such as general anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder. Speak to your healthcare practitioner about which treatment is right for you.

Am I covered by my insurance?

Medication coverage varies greatly between different plans, provinces and has specific criteria that determine eligibility. How does this visit work?

After creating an account, you will complete a medical assessment for evaluation by one of the Felix healthcare practitioners.

For patients with an ongoing and longstanding, effective mental health treatment, your consultation may be performed asynchronously, meaning your Felix practitioner will message you through your account after you submit your online assessment. You will have the opportunity to send your practitioner questions via your secure account. Practitioners may determine you require an audio or video visit, or may complete the assessment via secure messaging alone.

For patients who have not previously been prescribed mental health medication, you will be offered a 30 minute audio or video consultation with a Felix practitioner. This appointment will help determine the best treatment plan for you.

Once your visit has been completed, whether asynchronously or by audio/video appointment, if your practitioner has determined a prescription treatment is appropriate, they will write you a prescription. Our pharmacy will then ship your prescription to your home.

You’ll be able to message your healthcare practitioner if you have questions about your medication or want to make changes to your treatment at any time.

Will I receive follow up from my Felix healthcare practitioner?

Yes. Follow-up visits help us monitor how you are doing and how you are responding to treatment. If you are starting a new medication, generally you’ll be given a two month supply. We will send you an email to start a follow-up visit after 30 days. If your medication is longstanding and you’re doing well on it, generally we will supply six months of medication. We will send you an email to start a follow-up visit after 90 days. These follow-up visits are necessary in order to obtain your prescription and continue receiving your medication.

Who will be helping me?

After you complete your online assessment, we will match you to a Felix healthcare practitioner. Your healthcare practitioner will work with you to determine the best treatment plan for you. You’ll be able to message your healthcare practitioner if you have questions about your medication or want to make changes to your treatment.

Felix is not currently capable of face-to-face therapy with a psychotherapist or counsellor, but these services are self-referral and widely available in communities across Canada.

The chat is available 24/7 and since messaging is not in real-time it doesn't require scheduling. We’ll send you an email when your healthcare practitioner has replied to your message.
