Marvelon, is what is known as a combined oral contraceptive, because it combines two hormones estrogen and progesterone.
There are a variety of different COCs, with the difference being the specific types of progesterone used, and the dosage level.
For example, Marvelon contains 30 mcg ethinyl estradiol and a progesterone called desogestrel while Alesse contains 20 mcg ethinyl estradiol and a progesterone called levonorgestrel.
Birth control pills such as Marvelon help reduce the chances of pregnancy in two ways.
Firstly they inhibit your monthly release of an egg(s) by your ovaries. Secondly, studies suggest that changes in the endometrium (lining of the womb) and mucus produced by the cervix (opening of the uterus) occur with the use of birth control pills.
The combined effect is to make it less likely that a sperm will penetrate an egg, or for an egg to implant on the wall of the uterus.
Mirvala is the generic equivalent of Marvelon. There are no differences between the active ingredients of Marvelon and Marvelon.
When taking Marvelon, please monitor for a rare but serious side effect of blood clots: shortness of breath, chest pain (particularly with deep breathing), coughing up blood, persistent leg pain, or redness, swelling, or warmth in your lower legs (usually one-sided) can all be indications of a blood clot in the legs or lungs, and should never be ignored.
Please seek medical attention promptly if this occurs, in the emergency department.
Yes. All low dose combination pills can be used for the treatment of acne. Most often, your practitioner will recommend a standard, low dose combined birth control pill like Alysena/Alesse, Marvelon/Marvelon or Tricira Lo.
There are some newer formulation of combined pills with progestins that are possibly better for acne. In some studies, combined birth control pills containing drospirenone (like Yaz) performed better at reducing acne. However, this form of birth control has possibly been correlated with increased risk of blood clots.
You should not take Marvelon if you are pregnant. In addition, if you have experienced any of the following conditions: Blood clotting disorders, high blood pressure, heart disease, liver disease, breast disease, circulation problems, migraine with aura, or unexplained vaginal bleeding.
Smokers over 35 should not take Marvelon.

The cost of Marvelon pills will depend on your insurance coverage if you happen to have it. Opt to get your Marvelon prescription written and filled out online through Felix. You will be able to see the estimated cost of Marvelon (along with any other contraceptive options you discuss) during your online visit.
Felix charges $40 for your online visit. However, you will only be charged the fee if and when a healthcare practitioner approves you. The visit fee includes a prescription valid for 12 months and ongoing support from a doctor or pharmacist at Felix.
The estimated cost of Marvelon does not include insurance or benefits coverage, which would reduce the price and cover the cost entirely. In Canada, it is illegal to display market pricing for prescription medication. You can clear up questions about Marvelon, including the prescription price. The prices will include the pharmacy fill fee on the refill schedule.
Marvelon is available in Canada with a prescription. You can get a Marvelon prescription through a licensed healthcare practitioner. If you have a family doctor, they will be able to prescribe you Marvelon or a different oral contraceptive based on your requirements.
A walk-in clinic will also be able to provide a Marvelon prescription. You will be asked about your health history and when your last pap smear was, and if it’s been a long time since your last one, the doctors may only give you a prescription for a few months, encouraging you to get your regular pap smear and then come back for a longer prescription.
The simplest way to get Marvelon in Canada is through an online healthcare provider like Felix. Your prescription will still be written by a licensed healthcare professional, as is legally required in Canada, and you don’t have to take time to visit the office in person to get it.
Instead, you can set up an online consultation, provide the necessary information about your medical history and anything else that may be relevant, and get your Marvelon prescription without leaving your home. Note that you will need to check your blood pressure prior to receiving a prescription. You can then have Marvelon delivered directly to your doorstep through Felix so you can skip the pharmacy trip.
Marvelon is an effective form of oral contraception for preventing pregnancy. Similar to other estrogen-progestin oral contraceptives (COCs), Marvelon is 97 percent effective at preventing pregnancy when taken as directed. To be taken as directed, you should take the pills in your Marvelon pack at the same time each day.
If you have the 21-day pack, you can take a one-week break between packs or jump into your next pack if you want to skip your period. If you have a 28-day pack, you can take the seven inactive reminder pills before your next pack or skip them and begin a new one. The 97 percent effectiveness rate of this contraceptive means that if 100 women take Marvelon correctly while being sexually active, only three will get pregnant yearly.
This makes Marvelon a very effective method of birth control. If no birth control is used, somewhere between 60 to 85 women out of 100 will become pregnant in a year. Using condoms, between 2 and 12 women out of 100 will become pregnant in a year. A combination estrogen-progestin oral contraceptive like Marvelon, provided it contains at least 20 micrograms of estrogen, will only result in up to 3 women becoming pregnant, making it an efficient choice.
